General Information about Afghanistan

Afghanistan is located in central Asia and is landlocked by Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, China, Pakistan, Iran and Turkmenistan. These days Afghanistan is know as a war zone but that wasn't always the case. Once it was known for it's hospitality, delicious food and wonderful land. There are just over 31 million people living in Afghanistan with around 3 million people living in the capital city Kabul which is situated in the east of Afghanistan. Perisan, Pashto and Uzbek are the most commonly spoken languages in Afghanistan and the population are all Muslim, either belonging to Sunni Muslim or Shiite Muslim religions.

Kabul was once a popular tourist stop but now is has been ravaged by civil wars so there is nothing much to do or see here. In the valleys of Koh-e-Baba is the Minaret of Jam. This is a 65 metre high monument of three cylindrical shafts that were kept secret from the world until the 1940's.

The climate of Afghanistan is mainly continental with severe winters and and hot summers. The weather conditions in Afghanistan can be harsh and the ranges in altitude do have a strong effect on the climate, particulary in the winter months. Summers in July at Jalalabad can be very hot with the highest recorded temperature of 49 degrees. In the drought ridden parts in the south west the conditions are not quite as hot with highs of 35 degrees. Most of the countries rainfall occurrs during October and April with the annual rainfall average sitting around 300mm. Average winter temperatures sit at freezing or below with most of the snow falling up in the mountainous regions.

Afghanistan which is set in central Asia is officially known as the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has a total landmass of 647,500 square kilometres with no water included in this. The terrain of Afghanistan is mainly covered by snow capped mountains and deep valleys except for in the south west and north where there are more plains. Afghanistan is split in two by the Hindu Kush mountain range which measures over 7,485 metres. Hindu Kush which can be located at Nowshak is Afghanistan's highest peak and is an amazing sight to see. The lowest point in Afghanistan is Amu Darya which rises to only 258 metres.

The economy of Afghanistan has suffered greatly over the years due to conflict as well as a four year drought. The agricultural industry has improved greatly since the drought lifted in 2002 and now contributes over 38 percent of the economy as well as employing over 80 percent of the population. Afghanistan still remains a poor country and receives economic aid from more than 60 countries and international financial institutions. Afghanistan exports many products such as opium, fruits and nuts, handwoven carpets, wool, cotton, as well as precious and semi-precious gems. The official currency of Afghanistan is the Afghani.
