AlgiersGeneral Information about AlgiersAlgiers is the capital and largest city the African country Algeria. Algiers is located on the west of the bay of the Mediterrean Sea. The name Algiers comes from the Arabic word al-jaz?’ir meaning 'the islands'. The modern part of the city of Algiers is built at the seashore on level ground and is nicknamed Alger la Blanche, or, Algiers the White, because of the way the white buildings rise up above the sea. Algiers has an estimated population of 2,072,993 people which makes the urban area of Greater Algiers one of the largest in north Africa.
Algiers has many districts including the Casbah of Algiers which is a small city that is divided into two parts, the High City and the Low City. The Casbah is built on the of ancient Icosium and is were many of the ancient monuments, especially mosques are found.
Among the most popular places to visit in Algiers are the mosques and minarets found in the Casbah such as the Ketchaoua mosque dating from 1974, the Mosque el Djeded dating from 1660 which was built during Turkish reign, the Mosque Ali Betchnin built in 1623 and the Mosque El Kebir which is the oldest of them all and was built by Youssef Ibn Tachfin. El Kabir was later rebuilt in 1794.
The Monument des Matyrs is another popular place to visit which is a large concrete monument that commemorates the Algierian War of Independence which took place in 1962. The monument was constructed and opened in 1982 on the 20th anniversary of Algieria's independence.
Other local places of interest include the Place of Emir Abdelkader, the Grand Post Office and the Garden of Test which created in 1832 and is home to many exotic plants and gardens. The most commonly spoken language in Algiers is Arabic. BACK TO TOP |
