Bahrain consists of 33 islands and the two main islands, Bahrain and Al Muharraq are connected by a causeway. Bahrain has a population of over 708,000 people and is the smallest Arab state. The official language spoken in Bahrain is Arabic. Other languages spoken in Bahrain include English, Persian (Farsi) and Urdu. Over 80% of the Bahrainian population are Muslim, being either Sunni Muslim or Shi'a Muslim. There is also a small minority following of Christianity. Bahrain's capital city Manama is situated in the far north of the Bahrain island and is home to over 155,000 - almost one quarter of the nations total population.
Manama is a modern city with many skyscrapers. The ancient city of Bilad al-Qadim, dating from AD 900, lies just outside Manama and contains the Bab al-Bahrain archway and the main souk (marketplace). A popular place to visit in Bahrain is the A’ali Burial Mounds which has around 170,000 burial mounds dating as far back 3000BC and is one of the largest prehistoric cemetaries in the world. Rain fall is rare in Bahrain with run falling for only 10 days on average throughout the year. Most of the country's rainfall occurs during the winter months. Winter begins in December up until March with mild temperatures of 21 degrees. Bahrain experiences a damp north westerly wind known as the 'Shamal' which is a hot, dry south wind that blows continuously during June and July. Some of the islands of Bahrain are Nabi Salah, Jiddah, Sitrah, and Umm an Nasan as well as fifteen smaller islands with the laragest being Hawar of the coast of Qatar. EconomyLearn About The Economy Of BahrainThe economy of Bahrain is amongst the fastest growing in the Arab world. Bahrain is a highly developed country and has many natural resources. Bahrain is particulary rich in oil which petroleum production and processing accounting for over sixty percent of the country's exports. The agricultural industry is rather small and only employes one perent of the population. The main produces of Bahrain is fruit, vegetables, poultry, dairy products, fish and prawns. The service industry provides over 56 percent of the economy while employing just 20 percent of the population. Closely followed is the industry sector while contributing 43 percent of the economy while employing over 79 percent of the population. The main factors of the industry sector are petroleum processing and refining, aluminum smelting, iron pelletization, fertilizers, Islamic and offshore banking, insurance, ship repairing and of course the tourism industry.
