General Information about Dhaka

Dhaka is the capital and largest city of Bangladesh in Asia. Dhaka is situated in the centre of the nation on the eastern banks of the Buriganga River. During the 19th century under the Mughal rule, the city was also known as Jahangir Nagar and was the centre of the world-wide Muslim trade. Dhaka became the capital of independent Bangladesh in 1972 and is now the 11th most populous city in the world with a population of over 11 million people.

Nicknamed the 'City of Mosques and Shrines', Dhaka has several hundred interesting mosques. The most prominent mosques in the city include the 17th century mosque which features 7 domes, the Star Mosque which was built during the 18th century and the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. The city also features Hindu temples and Catholic churches.

The city of Dhaka also has many museums such as the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, the Mukti Juddha Museum, the Ahsan Manzil Museum, the Science Museum and the National Museum. The most popular of these museums are the Bangabandu Memorial Museum which was once the residence of founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Museum which contains artifacts from the Buddist, Hindu and Muslim renaissance periods in Bangladesh.

The Lalbagh Fort is another of Dhaka's most important sites. Built by Prince Mohammad Azam in 1678, the Lalbagh Fort was where the battale for independence took place in 1857 when 260 Sepoys revolted against the British Army. The Lalbagh Mosque, Audience Hall and tomb of Pari Bibi are some of the most prominent monuments standing at the site.
