General Information about Bangladesh

Bangladesh is located in south Asia and bordered by India to the north, west and east, Burma to the southeast and the Bay of Bengal in the Indian Ocean to the South.Over 150,000,000 people call Bangladesh home with around 6.5 million living in it's capital city Dhaka which is situated on the bank of the Buriganga River. The official language spoken in Bangladesh is Bangla (or Bangali) with English also being spoken. Major religions followed in Bangladesh are Muslim by 38% of the population and Hindu by 16% of the population.

The Mainimati Ruins consisting of more than 50 sites including Salban Vihara, Kotila Mura and Charpatra Mura, are one of Bangladesh's major attractions. These ruins date back as far as the 7th century and were very important to the Buddists. Another famous and popular Buddist ruin is the Somapuri Vihara, an 8th century Buddist monastry at Paharpur. The Somapuri Vihara also has a small museum featuring artifacts that have been excvated from the site.

Bangladesh has one of the wettest climates in the world with an annual rainfall of 1,525 mm. The climate is typically tropical with monsoon type conditions. May is the warmest month to visit while January is the coolest although the weather conditions don't vary much from each season. Bangladesh is prone to cyclones and storms that result in surging waves mainly from April to May and September through to November. Bangladesh experienced a major cyclone back in 1970 which was one of the worst natural disasters of the 20th century. April is the warmest month to visit with temperatures ranging from 33-36 degrees.

Bangladesh has a total land area of 144,000 square kilometres with over 10,090 square metres consititing of water. Much of the country side is low-lying and extremley flat with few mountainous regions. Set in the Chittagong Hill Tracts is the highest peak in Bangladesh which measures over 1,052 metres high in the Mowdok range. Along the coastal regions the world's largest mangrove forest is siturated.

Bangladesh's economy largely revoles around the agricultural industry with rice being its main procues due to the monsoon type condidtions. The agricultural industry supports up to 19 percent of the economy and employs over 63 percent of the population. Bangladesh is the world's fourth largest rice producing country in the world. The most popular produces of Bangladesh is tea, wheat, sugarcane, tobacco as well as jute. Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre and is one of the cheapest natural fibres. Bangladesh receives economic aid from many countries around the globe and its official currency is the Taka. 152
