General Information about Belize City

Belize's former capital Belize City is the largest city in the Central American nation and is also the capital of the Belize district. Belize City is situated on the coast of the Carribean Sea, on the mouth of the Belize River and lies around 80 kilometres to the north east of Belmopan. Belize City started as a small Mayan village then British lumber harvesters settled in the area and it became the capital city of Belize. It remained so until 1971, after surviving several fires and hurricanes. Today Belize City has a population of more than 70,800 people.

As a very cultural city, Belize City has a number of museums and religious sites which are popular to visit. Some of the best known museums in the area are Coastal Zone Museum, House of Culture, Museum of Belize and the Image Factory art gallery. As for the religious sites, St John's Cathedral is one of the most visited attractions in the city along with the Hindu Temple. Belize City also has the Yarbrough Cemetery where the English settlers were buried, some as far back as 1781.

The House of Culture is housed in the former Governement House which was built in 1814. This two story mansion is one of the oldest buildings in Belize City which managed to survive two hurricanes that badly damaged the area. The House of Culture was the residential quarters of the British governors and later Berlizean governors until 1996. It was here is 1981 that the Union Jack was taken down and replaced with the national flag of Belize at the stroke of midnight after the county became independent from Britain.

St John's Cathedral was built by slaves between 1812 and 1820 who used bricks shipped from Britian as ballast. This is the oldest Anglican church standing is Central America and is today one of the most visited sites in Belize City. The Bayman-era tombstones at the site tell the story of the settlers of the city and the slaves who built the cathedral. St John's Cathedral also features an ancient pipe organ which is one of the major attractions of the cathedral.
