BelmopanGeneral Information about BelmopanBelmopan has been the capital of Belize since 1961 when the former capital was destroyed by Hurricane Hattie. Situated near the Belize river, Belmopan is home to over 12,000 people. The name Belmopan originated by the words Belize and Mopan which are both important rivers within the region.
