Cotonou

General Information about Cotonou

Cotonou is the economical centre of Benin and the largest city in the nation. Cotonou is located about 25 kilometres south west of Benin's capital city Porto-Novo and is home to an estimated 1.2 million people. Contonou is the de facto capital of Benin as it is the seat of government. It is also the location of all the banks in the nation, almost all of the foreign embassy's and the international airport. The name Cotonou means 'The Mouth of the River of Death'.

The main attractions and features of Contonou are Cotonou Cathedral, Cotonou Central Mosque, Cotonou Friendship Stadium and the Danktokpa Markets.

Selling everything from radios to bat wings to pottery to food is the Danktokpa Markets which are locally known as Grande Marche du Danktokpa and are situated on 20 hectares of land. The markets are most famous for le fetiche d'amour, a love fetish. According to the locals, if you rub this on your hands and whisper the name of your desired partner into them seven times, when you touch that person they will become yours.

Possibly the most recognised landmark in Cotonou is the Cotoou Cathedral which is situated at the centre of the city where Avenue Steinmetz meets Avenue Clozel. The cathedral is hard to miss due to it's unique red and white striped exterior.
