Porto-Novo

General Information about Porto-Novo

Porto-Novo is the capital and second-largest city of the west African country of Benin. Porto-Novo is situated in the south of Benin on the Gulf of Guinea, about 20 minutes drive away from the beach. French is the most commonly spoken language in Proto-Novo, which is home to over 223,000 people. The name Proto-Novo is derived from Portuguese meaning of 'New Port' and it's original purpose was for slave trade in the late 16th century.

There are many interesting places to visit in Porto-Novo such as the Musee Honme which is also known as the Palais Royal du Roi Toffa and was once the residence of King Toffa in the late 1800's. There is also the Jardin Place Jean Bayol which contains a statue of the first King of Porto-Novo.

Other places of interest include the Porto-Novo Museum of Ethnography which houses many items of the history of both Porto-Novo and Benin including a vast collection of Yoruba masks, the Palais de Gouverneur and the da Silva Museum.

Also in Proto-Novo is a mosque which was once a Brazilian style church (in the 19th century), and the Institute of higher Studies of Benin. Proto-Novo also has two large stadiums that are most commonly used for football, the Stade Municipale and the Stade Charles de Gaulle.

Bear the city of Porto-Novo is the Pendjari national Park which is a natural habitat of many African species of wildlife and is another popular place to visit.
