BoliviaGeneral Information about BoliviaBolivia is located in central South America and is landlocked by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru. Bolivia, named after Simon Bolivar, has a population of just over 9.1 million people. There are three official languages spoken in Bolivia; Spanish, Quechua and Aymara. 95% of Bolivia's population are Roman Catholic, the remaining 5% follow Protestant religions. Bolivia's constitutional capital city Sucre is situated just south of the centre of the country, below the Mamore River and is home to over 247,000 people. La Paz, Bolivia's administrative capital is situated just west of the nations centre and is home to over 1.25 million people.
Besides the two capitals, Santa Cruz is another important city in Bolivia. Here is the Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo cathedral dating from 1845 which was built on the site of a church that dates back to 1605. The belltower of the cathedral offers great views of the city below. Also here is the Museo de Arte Sagrado (Museum of Holy Art) which houses many religious icons including the world's smallest book- the Lord's Prayer in many different lnguages. Tiahuanaco, near La Paz, was a great ceremonial centre in the pre-Inca days of South America. One of the most impressive structures here is the Akapana pyramid. Sucre is home to the Convento de San Felipe Neri which is now a parochial school but has been both a convent and a monastery. Also in Sucre is the Iglesia de la Merced. This church dates from the 1500's and has the most impressive interior of any church in Sucre including many paintings by Melchor Pérez de Holguín. Guesthouses in Bolivia
