Gaborone is situated in the South-East of Botswana, 15 kilometres from the South African border and lies between the Kgale and Oodi Hills on the bank of the Notwana River. The most common spoken languages in Gaborone are English and Tswana. Gaborone is the administrative capital of the south-east district of Botswana and is home to over 208,500 people.
The city centre of Gaborone was constructed in three years and all basic infrastructure was built for Botswana's Independence Day on September 30th 1966. During the previous three year, over 1,000 houses were built in Gaborone as well as a hospital, schools, a radio station, government houses and police stations. The town council who planned the city centre was led by Reverend J.D. Jones who later became the first mayor of Gaborone.
Gaborone has two major game reserves which are both very popular tourist attractions. The Mokolodi Game Reserve is one of the best nature reserves in the country. Mokolodi is home to the only tame cheetahs in Botswana which you can pat and play with. There are also safaris through the reserve where elephants, rhinos, hippos and giraffes can be seen.
Botswana's largest hill is the Kgale Hill which stands at 100 metres high. This is one of the most popular sites in Gaborone to look out over the city and surrounding areas. Also in Gaborone is the Gaborone Dam which is located in the centre of the city and provides the water supply to the city as well as being a popular attraction and water-sport venue.
