General Information about Botswana

Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, with South Africa on its Southern and South-Eastern borders, Nambia on its Western border, Zambia to the North and Zimbabawe on the North-Eastern border. Its capital city is Gaborone and its population is 1.6 million. The Kalahari Desert covers nearly 70% of the country with the rest being generally flat or undulating.
Botswana's national parks are unforgettable as the country has set aside 17% of its land area as national parks and game reserves where visitors can experience indigenous forests, flood plains and wide grasslands with many varieties of wildlife present.

October through to April are the hottest months to visit as well as the wettest. The weather conditions from May to September are dry and cool with average daily temperatures of 25 degrees. Nights in this period can be cool and frosty. The best times to visit Botswana is from April through to October with perfect weather and plenty of wildlife to be spotted.

Since Botswana gained its independence in 1966 its economy has grown considerably and has one of the world's highest economic growth rates. Diamond mining is the main contributor to this growth and now accounts for more than one third of the GDP. The service sector contributes over 50 percent of the economy with the tourism industry being a main factor. The agricultural industry only offers 4 percent of the economy with livestock being the main export. The main exports are copper, nickel, soda ash, textiles with diamonds bring the main export earning up 80 percent of the earnings. The official currency of Botswana is the Pula.
