Learn the history and heritage of Caruaru, a small regional town southwest of Recife known for their ceramic-figure sculpture. The clay art is brightly painted figurines capturing in activities such as dancing, playing with instruments and chasing chickens. Then travel 50km northwest of Caruaru to see the theater-city reconstruction of Jerusalem. A regional market town 138km inland from Recife, Caruaru has been recognized by UNESCO as the largest center for figure sculpture in the Americas. A visit to the craft market is certainly an unforgettable highlight of the tour. The clay figures, a legacy of the great folk artist Mestre Vitalino, make unique souvenirs to take back from your trip. After Caruaru, you'll visit Nova Jerusalem, the world's largest open-air theater, where Christ's Passion is performed every year during Easter Week. Lunch is served at Pousada da Paixao, a lodge inside the theater (itinerary not available during Easter Week). Shop for traditional earthenware sculptures, rope and leather craft and revel in the natural beauty of Penambuco's Agreste highlands, where you can learn about and share in the customs of the local residents.
