Rio de Janeiro

General Information about Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is one of the major cities in Brazil. Rio, as it is commonly referred to, is located in the south east of the nation on the coast of the South Atlantic Ocean. The name Rio de Janeiro means River of January. The city is named so as it was founded on the 20th of January 1502. Rio de Janeiro currently has a population of more than six million people and is nicknamed Cidade Maravilhosa, meaning Marvelous City. Rio is world famous for is Carnival celebrations which are held each year to signify the beginning of Lent.

Rio de Janeiro is also famous for it's many beaches, but the city has many attractions to offer such as Catedral Metropolitana, Cristo Rendentor, Feira Nordestina, Museu da Republica, Arco do Telles, Ilha Fiscal, National Historical Museum, Paco Imperial, Sugar Loaf Mountain and Santo Antonio.

Cristo Redentor, known as Christ the Redeemer in English, is one of the most famous sites in Brazil and has just been announced as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. As the Cristo Redentor is situated at the top of Corcovado Hill, visitors reach the statue via the Corcovado Train, which has been operating for more than 100 years and is the oldest touristic ride in Brazil. The Cristo Redentor statue stands at 39.6 metres tall and weighs over 700 tons.

The Sugar Loaf Mountain, also known locally as Pao de Acucar, is the best-known landmark in Brazil. The mountain is situated on a peninsula which juts out from Rio de Janeiro and over the South Atlantic Ocean. Sugar Loaf Mountain stands at 396 metres above sea level and is believed to have gotten it's name because of it's resemblence to an refined sugar loaf. It is possible to climb up the mountain to the peak, or catch the glass paneled cable car. Lying between the Sugar Loaf Mountain and nearby Morro do Urubu is the 100 metre long Praia Vermelha (or Red Beach).
