Bandar Seri Begawan

General Information about Bandar Seri Begawan

Bandar Seri Begawan is the capital and largest city of Brunei in Asia. Bandar Seri Begawan is situated near the mouth of the Brunei River which is an inlet of the South China Sea. It is believed that the site here has been occupied since the 7th century. Originally named Bandar Brunei, the city was renamed Bandar Seri Begawan in 1970 after the Sultan's father Sir Oman Ali Saifuddien. Since 2007, the city has expanded to ten times it's former size and is home to 55,000 people.

Bandar Seri Begawan has many places if interest and attractions such as the Royal Ceremonial Hall (also known as Lapau), the Royal Regalia Building, the Malay Technology Museum, the Brunei History Centre and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Moqsue.

The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is located in the centre of Bandar Seri Begawan and is considered by the people of Brunei to be the country's major landmark. The mosque was designed by an Italian architect so the building is heavily influenced by both Islamic and Italian styles. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque was constructed in 1958 and named after Brunei's 28th Sultan. The mosque features gold domes and marble minarets and can be seen from anywhere in the city.

Also in Bandar Seri Begawan is Kampong Ayer, the water village, where hundreds of houses appear to be just floating on the water. Water taxi's can be used to tour through the village.
After the Napoleonic wars, Diego Garcia became property of the United Kingdom, then became a dependency of Mauritius in 1814. Since the early 1970's, Diego Garcia has been used as a military base by the United Kingdom and the united States.

In 2000 the Diego Garcia islanders were granted permission to return to the island and become UK citizens, but the decision was revoked in 2004. This agreement is not set to expire until 2036 but the date could possibly be brought forward to 2016.
