Phnom PenhGeneral Information about Phnom PenhPhnom Penh is the capital and largest city of Cambodia in Asia. Phnom Penh is situated in the central-south of the nation where the Tonle Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers merge then flow south east into the South China Sea. Phnom Penh was originally settled in 1372 but did not became the capital of Cambodia until 1865. During the 1920's, the city was known as 'The Pearl of Asia'. Today over one million people live in Phnom Penh.
Phnom Penh has many popular attractions and landmarks such as the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, Wat Phoom, Wat Ounalom, Toul Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.
Wat Ounalom in Phnom Penh is the headquarters of the Cambodian Buddist patriarchate and was founded in 1443. The Wat Ounalom consists of 44 structures and is inhabited by monks and the head of Cambodia's Buddist brotherhood. Also at Wat Ounalom is the statue of Samdech Huot Tat who was the fourth patriarch of Cambodian Buddism and a stupa which contains one of Buddha's eyebrow hairs.
The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek is a site of extreme historical importance. 17,000 men, women and children who were detained and tortured at S-21 were brought to these fields between 1975 and 1978 to be killed.
