Montreal QC

General Information about Montreal QC

Canada's second largest city Montreal is located in the south east of the nation, in the province of Quebec. Montreal is situated 167 kilometres east of Canada's capital city Ottawa and 530 kilometres directly north of New York City in the United States. Montreal is among the five largest French-speaking cities in the world, though English is also spoken here as a second language. The city currently has a population of more than 1.8 million people and is the largest in the Quebec province.

Montreal has been nicknamed "La ville aux Cent Clochers" (The City of a Hundred Belltowers) and is world famous for it's many churches and cathedrals which are some of the most popular places for visitors to see in the city. The most well-known of these include Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral, Saint Joseph's Oratory and the Notre-Dame Basilica.

Possibly the most well-known of Montreal's sites is Mount Royal, which the city is named after. Mount Royal is part of the Monteregan Hills which are situated between the Laurentien Mountains and the Appalacian Mountains. Due to it's height, Mount Royal could be described as a hill but has always been known as a mountain. The site features three peaks, Colline de la Croix, Colline d'Outremont and Westmount Mount. The mountain is locatated on the site of Mount Royal Park which is one of the largest greenspaces in the city of Montreal. The slopes outside the park is also the location of Saint Joseph's Oratory.

Saint Joseph's Oratory is the largest church in Canada which began as a small chapel on Mount Royal in 1904. Soon after it became too small for the congregation and was enlarged with a church, known as the crypt, in 1917. The Oratory was inagurated as a basilica in 1924 and continued to be constructed until 1967. Today the Roman Catholic basilica has one of the largest domes of its kind in the world, second only to that of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, Italy.
