Vancouver BCGeneral Information about Vancouver BCLocated 3,551 kilometres west of Canada's capital city Ottawa is the city of Vancouver which is home to over 611,800 people, making it the third largest city in Canada. The city is situated in the Lower Mainland region of the British Columbia province and is bordered by water on three sides, and the Coast Mountain Range on the other. Vancouver is named after British explorer Captain George Vancouver who explored the area in 1792.
Vancouver has many attractions and activities to suit people of every age. Some of the most popular cultural attractions of the city include the Christ Church Cathedral, The Vancouver Museum, International Buddihist Temple and the Vancouver Art Gallery. Other popular places to visit are Grouse Mountain and the Playland Amusement Park. Vancouver is also set to host the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Situated in the north west of Vancouver is Varnier Park which is home to the Vancouver Museum, the largest civic museum in Canada. The museum has exhibits which explore both the distant and recent history of Vancouver and the surrounding areas as well as many temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The displays on the 1950's and 1960's culture are among the most colourful and popular displays to see. The Vancouver Museum also houses a collection of artifacts from overseas, including a mummy which was purchased from Egypt during the First World War.
The Playland Amusement Park has attracted guests since it opened in 1910 under the name Happy Land. The 15-acre amusement park was moved to it's current site and renamed Playland in 1958 and is currently owned by the Pacific National Exhibition Group. Of the many rides and attractions in Playland, one of the most popular is the original Wooden Rollercoaster which dates back to 1958. Other popular thrill rides in the park include the Wild Mouse Rollercoaster, Corkscrew Rollercoaster and Hell's Gate.
