Hanga Roa

General Information about Hanga Roa

Found along the Western side of Easter Island is where you will find the island's main town of Hanga Roa. Almost ninety percent of population of Easter Island reside in the small coastal town which is located between Terevaka Volcano and Rano Kau Volcano which are extinct. Easter Island and the island of Isla Sala y Gomez which remains uninhabited are, Chile's only two islands.

Hanga Roa's main attraction is its stone figures known locally as a Moai. A Moai is usually carved in the form of a human figure and you will find hundreds of these within Hanga Roa. One o Hanga Roa's most visited Moai is known as Ahu Te Pito Kura which is approximately 10 metres long making it the larges Moai. Hanga Roa's town centre is the place to be and it is here that you will find the majority of the restaurants, hostels and hotels.

The local beaches are known as Ovahe and Playa Anakena. Playa Anekena is of particular beauty with its sandy white beach, whereas Ovahe beach is better known for its cave formations. Hanga Roa boasts its own airport with regular flights landing at the Mataveri International Airport.
