General Information about Beijing

Beijing is the capital and second largest city of China in Asia. Also known as Peking, Beinjing is situated in the north east of China and is surrounded by the Yanshaan Mountains on the west north and east. The Beijing area has been inhabited since the first millennium BC and the capital of many dynasties under many different names. It is believed that Beijing twice held the honour of being the largest city in the world, first between 1425 and 1650 then again between 1710 and 1825. It is now estimated that Beijing is the 23rd largest city on the planet and has a population of over 8.6 million people.

There are many attractions, places of interest and places of historical significance in Beijing such as the Imperial City Exhibition, the Forbidden City, Tiananman Square, Summer Palace and Prince Gong's Mansion. Beijing also houses many museums, temples, churches, cathedrals and temples- including the Confucius Temple.

Also in Beijing is the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall in the middle of Tiananmen Square. This mausoleum was constructed at the site of Zhounghua Gate after the death of Mao Zedong in September 1976. The mausoleum contains the mummified corpse of the Great Helsman which lies in a crystal cabinet and is protected by guards.

The Confucius Temple which was originally constructed in 1302 then restored in 1411, situated in Beijing is one of the city's most famous landmarks. Confucius heavily influenced the philosophy of the Chinese and his beliefs were continued on through many centuries. The forecourt of the temple is inscribed with all Confucian scholars who passed the highest examinations of the state between 1416 and 1904.
