General Information about China

With a population of over 1,321,851,000 people, China is the world's most populated country. China is located in east Asia and is the 4th largest country in the world. China is bordered by Russia, North Korea, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam: a total of 14 countries and has coastlines of theYellow Sea, the East China Sea and the South China Sea.

The official languages spoken in China are Chinese and Mandarin but as there are many ethnis groups in China, numerous dialects are also spoken. Mahayana Buddism is the most popular organised religion follwed by the Chinese.

Changcheng, more commonly known as the Great Wall of China is largely regarded as China's main attraction to tourists. The Great Wall is the longest man-made structure in the world and was built/maintained from the 5th century to the 16th century. Because of China's enormous size the climate does tend to vary from region to region with subtropical conditions in the southern parts to subarctic in the north. China's climate is mainly controlled by the monsoon winds which can seasonally reverse its direction and can control China's rainfall. In the northern regions during winter average temperature sits around zero degrees with with lows of -30 degrees. July is the warmest month to visit ther northern regions with averages of 20 degrees. In the south the summers a warmer with averages of 28 degrees while winters are a mild 10 degrees. Rainfall is more apparent in the south which is usually brought on by the summer monsoons, while in the north the rainfall average is the lowest in the country.

The country of china is so large that it is in the top five largest countries is the world with a total land area of 9,596,960 square kilometres and a coastline of over 14,500 kilometres. The terrain of China is very diverse ranging from deserts to fertile river basins to mountainous mainly in the western and central parts.

The largest mountain in the world can be found in China in the Himalaya's between Napal and Tibet which is commonly known as Mount Everest but is also known as Chomolungma or Qomolangma which means in Tibetan 'Mother of the Universe'. In the 19th century Mount Everest was known as Deodungha or 'Holy Mountain' by the local Darjeeling language Mount Everest is an astronomical size of 8,848 metres and can take as long as twenty-one days to climb on a three month expedition. Many locals in China believe that Mount Everest should be referred to with its original name of Mount Qomolangma. On the opposite end of the spectrum the lowest point in China is Turpan Pendi which is located in north west China at 154 metres below sea level.

China has a very fast growing economy with its industry and construction sector accounting for over 52 percent of the economy while only employing approximately 22 percent of the population. The agricultural industry employs over 50 percent of the population. Despite this it only contributes 14 percent to China's economy, due to much of the China continuing to loose arable land due to erosion. China faces the problem of being a rapidly aging country due to its 'one child' policy which could become a long term threat to the economy. China mainly exports machinery and equipment, oil and mineral fuels, as well as optical and medical equipment. The official currency of China is the Yuan.
