ShanghaiGeneral Information about ShanghaiWith a population of more than 20 million people, Shanghai is one of the largest urban areas in the world, and the largest city in China. Shanghai is located on the east coast of China and is situated on the mouth of the Yangtze River. The city was originally a textiles and fishing town, but in the 19th century Shanghai's importance grew rapidly as the it's location was ideal for trades with the west. Today Shanghai boasts the fastest growing economy in the world and is the commercial, financial and industrial centre of China.
Shanghai has many popular attractions and interesting places to visit such as the Confucian Temple, Jade Buddha Temple, Jinjiang Amusement Park, The Bund neighbourhood, the Shanghai Museum, People's Square, Shanghai Natural History Museum, The Yuyuan Gardens, Temple of the Town Gods and the Shanghai Zoo.
The Yuyuan Gardens are located in the north east of Shanghai and are one of the most popular attractions in the city. Construction on the gardens began in 1559 and took 19 years to complete. The gardens feature many examples of classic Chinese architecture, pools teeming with fish, pavilions, the Jade Rock and the Hall of the Heralding Spring. Just next to the enterance of the Yuyuan Gardens is the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse which is one of the most famous teahouses in China and has been visited by many important guests, including Queen Elizabeth II and former President of the United States, Bill Clinton.
Like most historic Chinese cities, Shanghai features temple dedicated to Confucious. The Confucian Temple in this city, also known as Jiading Kongmiao, originally dates from 1219 and was restored during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1855 the temple was moved to it's current location which is also home to many ancient trees, including a 300-year-old Elm Tree. The site of the Confucian Temple also houses the municipal museum of Jiading which features 90 stone tablets with ancient inscriptions.
