General Information about Tianjin

Tianjin which is not as well known as other popular travel destinations in China can be found approximately an hour and a half away from Beijing. Tianjin is a coastal city set along the Bohai Gulf and the Hai He River within the northern parts of China. Tianjin which has been inhabited since 340 B.C and boasts a fast growing population of over ten million residents.

Visiting the city of Tianjin is a great way to experience the real China and attracts many day visitors because of its close proximity to Beijing. Of course it would be impossible to see all of Tianjin in one day and for those wishing to stay longer there are many hotels and hostels to choose from.

There are many interesting things to see and do while you are visiting Tianjin but shopping would have to be one of the most popular activities. Its best to begin at the Ancient Market which is known by the locals as Guwan Shichang. The Ancient Culture Street is another well known destination of Tianjin and should be next on your list if you are only spending one day here at Tianjin.

The Monastery of Deep Compassion which is known by many names such as the Temple of Mercy and the Temple of Deep Compassion is known locally as Dabei Yuan is Tianjin's most visited temple. The Monastery of Deep Compassion dates back to 1643 with some parts of the building being rebuilt in 1669.

There are many varieties of transportation to choose from when visiting Tianjin such as plane, bus, train, car and boat. The closest airport is approximately 15 kilometres away from Tianjin and is known as the Tianjin Binhai International Airport.
