Tibet

General Information about Tibet

Found in Central Asia the region of Tibet has been inhabited since as early as 50 C.E and was originally independently ruled but has been under the rule of China since 1950. Tibet which is famous for boasting the world's highest mountain of Mount Everest is closely neighboured by Nepal and Bhutan.

Set on the Tibetan Plateau the regions capital city is known as Lhasa. Lhasa is home to over 258,000 residents and like the rest of Tibet,Tibetan Buddhism is an important aspect of everyday life. Tibetan Buddhism is so prevalent in Lhasa that it is here that the Dalia Lama's traditional seat is located. Tibet is well known as being the Roof of the World while nations capital Lhasa is Tibetan for Place of the Gods.

One of Tibet's most recognised historical buildings is the Potala Palace which is set in Lhasa. The Potala Palace is today listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and has had many purposes throughout history. Today the Potala Palace is open to the public as a museum but was the Dalai Lama's home up until 1959.The Potala Palace dates back to 1645 and is set at an elevation of 12,100 feet.
