General Information about Colombia

Columbia is located in the northwest of South America and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the southeast, Peru to the south, Ecuador to the southwest, the North Pacific Ocean to the west and the Central American country Panama to the northwest. Colombia has a population of over 44 million people and has the second largest Spanish speaking population in the world. Over 90% of Colombia's population are Roman Catholic. Colombia's capital and largest city Bogota is located in the centre of the country near the Andes mountain range and is home to over 7 million people.

San Agustín in Colombia is one of South America's most important archaeoogical sites and features over 500 statues and tombs that were placed there by a civilization that was there a long time before the Europeans arrived. The two main sites of San Agustín are Parque Arqueológico and Alto de los Ídolos. The Villa de Leyva, not far from Bogota was founded in 1572 and is a very well preserved village. This village features stonewashed homes and churches from colonial times and has a pleasant climate. Other colonial towns in Colombia are Santa Fe de Antioquia and Mompos which were both founded in the 1500's and have buildings dating back to this time.
