Moroni

General Information about Moroni

Moroni is the capital and largest city of the African island country Comoros. Moroni is situated on the western coast of Comoros' largest island, the Grande Comore island, and is home to over 60,000 people. The most commonly spoken languages in Moroni are Comorian, French and Arabic. Moroni has many beaches which are major attractions for people visiting the city.

Before the 16th century, Moroni was used mainly by Arab merchants. In the 19th century the French conquered the city and it became the capital of a French overseas territory. In 1975 Moroni became the capital of Comoros as an independent nation.

Sunni Muslim is the major religion of the inhabitants of Comoros so Moroni is heavily influenced by Muslim and Arabic culture. Because of this, Moroni has many beautiful mosques that are great sites and very popular among tourists. The most well rcognised of these is the Vendredi Mosque which offers a great view of Moroni and the surrounding areas.

Just outside of Moroni is the fishing village Itsandra. This was the capital of the island in ancient times and has many royal tombs and a fortress to be seen. There is also a popular beach at Itsandra and sometimes the local men perform dances for visitors to the city.
