General Information about Alajuela

Located in the centre of Costa Rica, 19 kilometres from the capital city San Jose is Alajuela. Alajuela lies in Costa Rica's Central Valley and is elevated 952 metres above sea level. The district of Alajuela has an area of 8.88 square kilometres and has a population of over 46,500 people. The city is also the capital of the Alajuela Province of Costa Rica and the birthplace of Juan Santamaria, the hero of Costa Rica who contributed immensly to the Costa Rican victory over Filibuster William Walker in 1856.

Alajuela is one of the most visited cities in Costa Rica and features many popular attractions such as The Central Cathedral, Iglesia La Agonia, Juan Santamaria Museum, Braulio Carrilo National Park and Poas National Park.

The Juan Santamaria Museum, locally known as Museo Juan Santamaria is located one block north of the centre of Alajuela and is housed in an old jail. Historical artifacts, documents, maps and paintings relating to Costa Rica's hero Juan Santamaria and the war with American William Walker. There is also a small auditorium which houses occassional performances. Located near the museum is the Parque Juan Santamaria which features a statue of the local hero.

Situated in the centre of the city, due to Spanish tradition, is the Central Cathedral or Alajuela Cathedral. The cathedral was constructed in the 19th century along with the buildings which surround it. Built in neoclassical design, the cathedral features an unmissible red dome an ornate cupola inside above the altar. The Central Cathedral has survived an earthquake which devestated the city in 1991 and is also the resting place of two former Costa Rican Presidents.
