General Information about Cuba

Cuba is an island nation found in the Caribbean that is comprised of the main island Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud and many small islands. Cuba is the largest island in the Caribbean and has a population of over 11,000,000 people. There are many religions represented by the Cuban population such as Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jehovah's Witness, Santaria and Judaism. Spanish the official language of the nation and is spoken throughtout all the Cuban islands.

Cuba's capital and largest city Havana is situated on the main island Cuba and has a population of almost 3 million people, making Havana the largest city in the Caribbean. Havana is also one of the oldest cities in the Western Hemisphere that was founded by Europeans. There are many religious and spiritul sites to visit in Cuba, especially at Havana. There are around 18 churches and cathedrals throughtout the city. Most of these show the differences of Catholic beliefs and African traditions.

Cuba enjoy a semi-tropical to temperate climate with two main seasons through out the year. The wet season begins in May and continues on up until October . During this period hurricanes do occur, particulary between the months of June and November. Travelling during this period should be taken with care with strong winds and heavy rainfall. The dry season begins in November and lasts up until April with hot and humid weather. Temperatures usually average between 25 and 27 degrees during this period and are cooled by the north east trade winds. During the winter months in Cuba north east rade winds are also common. January is the coolest month to visit with averages of 23 degrees while August is the warmest with highs of 28 degrees. The annual rainfall is approximately 54 inches.

Cuba which is an archipelago group set between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean with a total area of 110,860 square kilometres with the main island being the seventeenth largest island in the world. The coastline of Cuba extends for over 3,735 kilometres across more than 4,000 islands and cays. The archipelago is bordered by the Straits of Florida, the Nicholas Channel, the Old Bahamas Channel, the Windward Passage, the Cayman Trench, the Yucatan Channel and the Gulf of Mexico.

The terrain of Cuba is mainly flat with rolling hills as well as being mountainous and rugged in the south east. The highest point of Cuba is known as Pico Turquino and rises to over 1,974 metres. Pico Turquino can be found along the Sierra Maestra mountain range om the Samtoagp de Ciba Province. The longest river of Cuba can be found in south east Cuba and flows for over 343 kilometres and is known as Cauto River. The lowest point of Cuba is the Caribbean Sea at sea level.

Cuba receives large quantities of petroleum oil from Venezuela and in return offers the services of its workforce to Venezuela. The agricultural industry is particulary small with a contribution of just over 4 percent, with the main produces being sugar, tobacco, citrus, coffee, rice, potatoes, beans and livestock.. The most popular industry trades are sugar, petroleum, tobacco, construction, nickel, steel, cement, agricultural machinery and pharmacuticals. The official currency of Cuba is the Cuban Peso and the Convertible Peso.
