Kinshasa

General Information about Kinshasa

Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic Of Congo. Kinshasa is located in the east of the country on the Congo River. Kinshasa has a population of over 7 million people but that wasn't always the case. In the past Kinshasa was the site of simple fishing villages. The main language spoken in Kinshasa is French.

Henry Morton Stanley founded the city in 1881 and named it Léopoldville after King Leopold II of Belgium as he controlled most of the region that is now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1960, the nation became independent from Belgium and was renamed Kinasha in 1966 afrter a village that was once in existence near the site.

One of the most famous events to have taken place in Kinasha's history is the 'Rumble in the Jungle' boxing match which occured in 1974. During this match, Muhammad Ali triumphed over George Foreman and regained the World Heavyweight title.

One of Kinashas most popular placeds to visit to gain knowledge of culture and traditions is the Musee National de Kinasha, or the National Museum. This museum houses the best collection of Zairian Art in the whole of the Cemocratic Republic of Congo.

Other sites of interest in Kinasha are the University of Kinasha, Ma Vallee lake and Chutes de Lukia. Chutes de Lukia lies just outside the heart of the city and has many lake to swim in as well as a restaurant and the Bonobo orphanage which is home to baby chimps who love visitors.
