The Dominican Republic is an island nation located in the Caribbean which was founded by Christopher Columbus in 1492. The Dominican Republic takes up the eastern two thirds of the Hispaniola island and shares the island with it's neighbouring country Haiti. The Dominican Republic has a population of around 9,365,000 people, around 2.1 million people are living in the nationals capital and largest city Santo Domingo which is situated on the Ozama River on the coast of the Caribbean Sea. The official language spoken by the Dominican people is Spanish. Roman Catholicism is the most popular religion as it is followed by 95% of the Dominican population. The Dominican Republic is one of the best sources of amber in the world.

There are many museums in The Dominican Republic. The Museo Alcázar de Colón was once the home of Christopher Columbus' son Diego. It contains many objects that once belonged to the Columbus family. There is also the Museo de las Casas Reales which displays the president/dictator Trujillo's weaponry collection and the Museo Mundo de Ambar which contains collections of amber.

The Dominican Republic is separated by Puero Rico by a channel known as Mona Passage which is over 130 kilometres wide.

The terrain of the Dominican Republic is mostly mountainous with rugged highlands and fertile valleys. The highest point is known as Pico Duarte and rises to over 3,175 metres. Pico Duarte can be found along the Cordillera Central range and is a popular hiking destinations for mountaineers. The longest river of the Doninican Republic is known as Yaque Del Norte River andis over 208 kilometres long and flows through Santiago and the Cibao Valley. The water supplies of Yaque Del Norte River are an important water supply to many farmers particulary rice farmers in the area.

The Dominican Republic suffers from underemployment and high unemployment rates due to many factors but particulary income inequality. Over 17 percent of the population are employed in the agricultural industry with the main produces being sugarcane, coffee, cotton, cocoa, tobacco, rice, as well as livestock. The industry sector is also important to the economy with the main trades being sugar processing, ferronickel, gold mining, textiles, cement and tobacco. The official currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso.
