Cuenca

General Information about Cuenca

Officially known as Santa Ana de los cuatro rios de Cuenca, the city of Cuenca has been inhabited 8060 B.C although the city was not officially founded until 1557. Listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO the city of Cuenca is located within the province of Azuay boasting a population of approximately 400,000 residents making the third most populated city in Ecuador. Cuenca is closely neighboured by Azogues with the closest major city's being Guayaquil and Machala.

The city itself is set at an elevation of 8,200 feet and is completely surrounded by mountains and is home to four rivers. Visiting during June and September is the best time to visit for dry weather, whereas if you visit between March and May and October and December you may come across some wet weather. One of the city's most well known attractions is known simply as the Old Cathedral which was originally built in 1557. The best way to travel to Cuenca is flying with regular flights landing at the Aeropuerto Mariscal Lamar airport.
