AswanGeneral Information about AswanAswan was the first town to be built in the county of Egypt, under the name Swenet. Today it is one of the most prosperous cities in the nation with a population of over 1.2 million people. Aswan is located some 680 kilometres south of Cairo, below the city of Luxor, the Aswan Dam and Lake Nassar. The city stands on the eastern bank of the River Nile and includes the island of Elephantine. Aswan is one of the driest inhabited cities in the world. Here in Nubian settlements, many houses don't have roofs on each room as they are so unneccessary.
There are numerous attractions and places to visit in the city of Aswan such as the Nubian Museum, Unfinished Obelisk, Tombs of the Nobles, Kubbet el-Hawa, Monastery of St Simeon, Mausoleum of the Aga Khan and Philae Temple. It is also very popular to visit the souqs, or markets, which offer a wide variety of goods, sold by friendly locals.
Kubbet el-Hawa, or Rock Tombs, are situated north of Elephantine and house the rock tombs of the princes and grandees of the area, which date back to the Old Kingdom and Middle Kingdom eras. Some of the tombs here include Tomb of Aku, Tomb of Hekaib I, Tomb of Hekaib II, Tomb of Kakemet, Tomb of Prince Sarenput I and Tomb of Prince Sarenput II. The view from the top of the hill here is considered one of the best in the city of Aswan.
Locally known as DeirAmba Samaan or DeirAmba Hadra is the ruined Monastery of St Simeon, one of the oldest and best preserved Coptic monasteries. This monastery was built in the seventh century, but then abandoned in the 13th due to water shortages. The Monastery of St Simeon is situated atop a hill in the desert on the west bank of the River Nile and is surrounded by a wall which stands between 6 and 7 metres high.
