CairoGeneral Information about CairoCairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt. The official arabic name of the city is Al-Qahirah which translates to 'The Triumphant' or 'The Vanquisher' in english. Cairo was founded in 969 and was the home of royalty during the Arab Shi'a dynasty. The heart of the city of Cairo is now home to over 7.7 million people and is and is the sixteenth most populated metropolitan area in the world. The language spoken in Cairo is Arabic.
Cairo is home to some of the most famous sites in the world such as the Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza. There are many legends and superstitions regarding the Sphinx which heightens the mystery which surrounds the monument. The Sphinx is the largest monolithic monument in the world and is comprised of a human head on a lions body. It is still unknown who the face is modeled from, why it was built and who built it.
The Giza Necropolis, or the Great Pyramids of Giza, are three monuments that lie on the outskirts of Cairo. The largest of the three pyramids is the Pyramid of Khufu, also known as the Great Pyramid, which is the last remaining Seventh Wonder of the Ancient World. The Pyramid of Khufu took the ancient Egyptians 20 years to construct and is the tomb of Pharoh Khufu, who reigned during the fourth dynasty.
There are many religious sites throughout Cairo including churches, mosques and synagogues. The Hanging Church located in Old Cairo, which could date back as far as the 7th century, is built on top of the Water Gate of Roman Babylon.
