Luxor

General Information about Luxor

Luxor is built on the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes and is one of the leading tourist destinations in Egypt. The city is located in central Upper (southern) Egypt, along the River Nile. Luxor is popularly referred to as 'The Greatest Open-Air Museum in the World' and has a population of more than 376,000 people. The city is divided into two districts- the East Bank and the West Bank.

The West Bank of Luxor is where most of the city's famous sites are located, including the Tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, Malkata Palace and the Tombs of the Nobles. The East Bank is home to the Luxor Temple, Luxor Museum, Museum of Mummification and the Karnak Temple complex.

For almost 500 years between the 16th and 11th century BC, tombs were constructed for the Pharaohs of Egypt in the Valley of the Kings. Today this is one of the most popular attractions in Luxor as it houses the tomb of Tutankhamen. Thutmose I and Ramesses III. The Valley of the Queens is located nearby and houses the tombs of the wives of the Pharaohs. Some of the most well known tombs in this valley include that of Queen Sitre and Queen Nefertari.

The second most visited historical site in Egypt, and the most ancient religious site in the world is the Karnak Temple complex located on Luxor's East Bank. When this site was part of the ancient city Thebes, this was the main place of worship of the Theben Triad of Gods, Amon, Mut and Khons. The largest part of the complex is the precinct of Amun-Re, which is dedicated to the chief of the Theben Triad and the Sun God.

The Mummification Museum, also located on the East Bank is another popular attraction as it gives visitors an insight into the art of mummification with various exhibits and artifacts on display.
