Sharm el-Sheikh

General Information about Sharm el-Sheikh

Situated on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, in Janub Sina', Egypt is Sharm el-Sheikh. This city if one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Arab world and is located between the Red Sea and Mount Sinai. Often referred to as Sharm, the city lies almost 400 kilometres to the south east of Egypt's capital city Cairo. Sharm el-Sheikh has been nicknamed the 'City of Peace' due to the number of international peace conferences which have been held in the city.

Sharm el-Sheikh boasts a number of attractions and interesting places to visit as well as many activities to partake in. The city is very family orientated so there is something here for everyone, including diving, bowling, watersports, lazing on the beaches and even iceskating. The most popular attraction of Sharm el-Shiekh remains Saint Catherine's Monastery.

Located on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula is Saint Catherine's Monastery, one of the oldest continuously operating Christian monasteries in the world. Saint Catherine's Monastery is situated at the mouth of a gorge, at the foot of the Mount Sinai and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is believed that this is where Moses received part of the Ten Commandments from God. Saint Catherine's Monastery was built here between 527 and 565 AD by order of Emperor Justinian and encloses the Chapel of the Burning Bush. Saint Catherine's Monastery is officially named The Sacred and Imperial Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount of Sinai and is a highly sacred place in Christian and Islamic religions.

The warm water of the Sharm el-Sheikh beaches, coupled with the impressive scenery and underwater life has made the city a very popular spot for scuba diving. The Ras Mohammad National Park of South Sinai, situated on the very tip of the Sinai Peninsula is one of the most famous and popular dive sites of the Red Sea as it features 800 metre deep reef walls, coral gardens and a heavy current.
