General Information about El Salvador

El Salvador is located in Central America and is bordred by Guatemala, Honduras and the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador is one of the most densely populated American nation and has a population of over over 6,900,000 people. Once the site of a brutal civil war, El Salvador is now a popular tourist destination with forests, mountains and volcanic landscapes. The official language spoken in El Salvador is Spanish but some Amerindian people speak Nahua. Many locals also speak English. 83% of the population are Roman Catholics but Protestantism is gradually on the rise throughout the country. El Salvador's capital city is San Salvador and is located in the middle of the country near the base of the San Salvador volcano.

There are many popular activities in El Salvador including danicing, 10-pin bowling, soccer and visiting the casinos. San Salvador also has many monuments such as the Monumento a la Memoria y La Verdad which was erected in memory of those who died or disappeared in the 1970's and the civil war. The most easily recognized monument in El Salvador is Monumento a El Salvador del Mundo, which translates to 'Monument to the Saviour of The World'. There are also great shopping centres in El Salvador such as the Galerías Escalón which has stores that sell expensive clothes and jewelery.

El Salbador's climate is tropical on the coast and temperate in the uplands. The El Salvador has two seasons, the wet season (winter, or invierno) from May to October and the dry season (summer, or verano) from November through to April. Temperatures vary in El Salvador depending on elevation, not season. The warmest region is the Pacific Lowlands where temperatures range during the year from 25°C to 29°C. The central plateau of El Salvador has an average anuual temperature of 23°C. Druing the wet season, the annual rainfall can as high as 200 centimetres. It rains heaviest on the southern-facing mountain slopes. Hurricanes generally do not occur in El Salvador.

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America and is located between Guatemala, Honduras and the North Pacific Ocean. El Salvador is the only Central American country that is not bordered by the Caribbean Sea and is a predominantly mountainous country. El Salvador is prone to earhquakes and volcanic activity as it is situated on three of the seven major tectonic plates that make up the surface of the Earth. El Salvador features two parallel mountain ranges (which include over 20 volcanoes) that are seperated by a central plateau, a narrow coastal plain that hugs the Pacific Ocean coastline and over 300 rivers.

Economy

El Salvador has the third largest economy in Central America. Coffee was the only source of foreign exchange in El Salvador for many decades until the late 1990's when the international prices for coffee fell. El Salvador had also suffered through a civil war in the 1980's so the government was forced to focus the economy in a new direction. The maquila industry provides many jobs for the El Salvadorians and is a major exporter of clothing to the United States. Other important industries include food processing, petroleum, funiture and chemicals. Major exports still include coffee in addition to sugar, corn, rice and cotton.
