MalaboGeneral Information about MalaboMalabo is the capital and largest city of Equatorial Guinea. Malabo is situated on the northern coast of Equatorial Guinea's Bioko Island on the rim of a sunken volcano. Despite being the capital city of Equatorial Guinea for many decades, and being home to over 100,000 people, Malabo still has very few developed roads and paved streets.
Malabo was first founded by the British in 1827 when they leased the island from the Spanish. The British named the city Port Clarence and used it as a base to stop slave trading. When the Spanish regained control of the island, they renamed the city to Santa Isabel and then proclaimed it as the capital city of Equatorial Guinea in 1969. Four years later, President Francisco Macias Nguema renamed the city to Malabo, an authentic African name.
One of the most popular places to visit is Ureca Beach which lies just outside of Malabo city. During the dry season, many turtles come up to the beach to lay their eggs. Since 1996 villagers have been guarding the turtles and their eggs during nesting seasons ensure optimal survival for both parents, hatchling and the unborn turtles. There are also hiking trails through the nearby jungle at Ureca Beach.
The two most visited buildings in Malabo are the Malabo Cathedral and the Malabo Court Building. BACK TO TOP |
