Libreville

General Information about Libreville

Libreville is the capital and largest city of Gabon in Africa. Libreville is a trade centre for timber in Gabon and is situated on the Komo River, near the Gulf of Guines which leads into the Atlantic Ocean. Originally the Mpongwe tribe inhabited the area before the French claimed the land and officially founded it in 1843. In 1848 Libreville was given it's name which means 'Freetown' in French. Today over 578,000 people live in Libreville.

There are many sites which attract visitors to Libreville such as the National Museum of Arts and Traditions, St Marie's Cathedral, St Michael's Church (carved from wood), the Arboretum de Sinbang and Nkembo. The most popular district of Libreville is Mont-Bouet where Libreville's main markets are hosted.

The National Museum of Arts and Traitions houses many interesting artifacts as well as an extensive collection of masks and is one of the must see places in Libreville. Here also is the L'Eglise St-Michel, ot Saint Michael's Church. This church is set apart from most others because of it's large wooden coloumns that were carved by a blind Gabonese man.

Also in Libreville is the Cap Esterias Beach, the Ekwata Beach and the Pointe-Denis Beach. Each beach offeres different sepecialities. The Ekwata Beach lies near a forest and has a beautiful background whereas the Pointe-Denis Beach offers places to camp as well as general beach activities.
