Banjul

General Information about Banjul

Banjul is the capital city of The Gambia which is located in Africa. Banjul is situated on Saint Mary's Islands, also known as Banjul Island, where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. In 1816 the British founded the city and named it Bathurst after Henry Bathurst, the Secretary of the British Colonial Office. In 1973 the city was renamed Banjul. Today over 523,500 people live in Banjul.

The Arch 22 is one of the most important sites in Banjul. The Arch was built in 1994 at the entrance to the city. It commemorates the day President Dawda Jawara was overthrown and replaced by President Yahya Jammeh on the 22nd July 1994.

There are many attractions inside the city such as the Gambian National Museum, the Albert Market and the Banjul Court and State Houses. Also here are several mosques and two cathedrals.

The Abuko Nature Reserve, just outside of the Banjul city, is one of the most popular places to visit in Banjul and the Gambia. This is one of the best places to go bird-watching as over 250 different species of birds call this reserve home. The Abuko Nature Reserve is also home to over 52 mammal species such as monkeys, bushbucks, ground squirrels and porcupines as well as crocodiles, pythons and forest cobras.
