Accra

General Information about Accra

Accra is the capital and largest city of Ghana in Africa. Accra is also the administrative, economic and communication capital of Ghana. Accra is situated in the south of Ghana on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Accra was founded in the late 1600's and was named Accra, which is derived from the Akan word 'Nkran' meaning ants. Today Accra has a population of over 2 million people.

Accra has a number of popular attractions such as the National Museum of Ghana, the National Archives of Ghana and the Accra Centre for National Culture. The National Museum of Ghana was opened in March 1957 and is the oldest and largest of the six museums in Ghana. There are many permanent exhibitions where cheif's regalia is on display along with traditional Ghanian musical instruments, textiles and pottery.

The Osu Castle, also known as Fort Christiansborg or The Castle, is the place of residence of the President of Ghana. The Castle is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea and dates back to the 16th century. The most important government business is carried out here by the 2,100 employees of the Castle.

Other interesting sites in Accra include the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and memorial park which are located in downtown Accra. These are dedicated to the Ghanian leader Kwame Nkrumah who died in 1972.
