AntiguaGeneral Information about AntiguaLocated in the central highlands of Guatemala is La Antigua Guatemala, more commonly known as Antigua. The city is situated about 20 kilometres to the west of Guatemala's capital city Guatemala City and is one of the oldest cities in Central America. Between 1543 and 1776 Antigua was the capital city of the nation under Spanish rule. Today the city is a well known UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to more than 35,000 people.
Antigua is one of the most popular destinations to visit in Guatemala is the city features numerous ruins, historic sites and attractions such as Cathedral of San Jose, Museum of Santo Domingo, Chuch School of Christ, Catedral de Santiago, Ruins of Old San Jose, Parque Central, Acro de Santa Catalina, Iglesia de San Francisco and Las Capuchinas.
The Catedral de Santiago, or Cathedral of St James, has a long history. It was first built in Antigua in 1542, demolished in 1668, rebuilt by 1680, was wrecked in 1773, then partly rebuilt between 1780 and 1820. The cathedral also suffered massive damages throughtout the years due to earthquake, yet is still one of the most visited sites in Antigua. The remains of the main part of the cathedral features massive columns, archways and underground crypts. Catedral de Santiago is the burial place of many important figures of Guatemala's past including Pedro de Alvardo along with his wife and daughter, the first Bishop of the nation Francisco Marroquin and Bernal Diaz del Castillo.
Originally run by nuns from Madrid and built in 1736 is La Capuchinas Convent. It was heavily damaged during earthquakes then abandoned in 1773. Restorations began on the convent in 1943 and still continue today, though the convent is now a museum of religious colonial life. One of the most attractive features of La Capuchinas is the round tower like building with 18 nun's cells surrounding a circular patio.
