ConakryGeneral Information about ConakryConakry is the capital and largest city of Guinea in Africa. Conakry is a port on the Atlantic Ocean which was originally situated on Tombo Island. It is estimated that 2 million people live in Conakry, making the city home to a quarter of Guinea's total population. The most commonly spoken language in Conakry is French.
Conakry has many attractions such as the Guinea National Museum, the Guinea Palais du Peuple, the nearby Iles de Los and the Conakry Grand Mosque which was built by former Guinean President Ahmed Sekou Toure.
The Iles de Los is a popular place to visit and is a group of islands which lie off the coast of Conakry. Iles de Los is comprised of six islands; Tamara, Kassa and Roume as well as three smaller islands Coraille, Blanche and Cabris. Roume Island is said to have been the basis of the novel and film Treasure Island whilst Tamara was a prison.
Also located in Conakry is the Polytechnical Institute of Conakry, also known as the university of Conakry. This was independent Guinea's first school of higher education and was constructed in 1963 with help from the Soviet Union.
