Haiti

General Information about Haiti

Haiti is located in the Caribbean and takes up one-third of the island of Hispaniola which it shares with the Dominican Republic. To Haiti's north is the North Atlantic Sea, to it's south the Caribbean sea and to it's east the Dominican Republic. The islands of Tortuga and Gonâve also belong to the country of Haiti. The two official languages of Haiti are French and Haitian Creole. Haiti has a population of 8,300,000 people. Haiti's capital and largest city Port-au-Prince, located on the Gulf of La Gonave is home to around 1,280,000 people. There are many religions followed in Haiti such as Roman Catholic, Baptist and Adventist. Roman Catholicism is folled by 80% of the population, however almost 50% of the Haitian population practice Voodoo.

The Parc National Historique La Citadelle is a popular place to visit in Haiti. Here lies the fortress Citadelle Laferrière which took 15 years to build and was completed in 1820. Also popular are the Bassins Bleu which are three cobalt blue pools joined together by cascades. According to local legend, nymphs live in the grottos here but hide when they hear human footsteps.

Haiti experiences a typical tropical climate which is hot and humid with two wet seasons throughout the year with conditions being modified by elevation. The first wet season begins in April and lasts up until June with the second lasting for just two months over October and November. July is the warmest month to visit with temperatures going as high as 35 degrees while January is the coolest with some parts going as low as 23 degrees. The annual rainfall of Haiti sits at approximately 54 inches with hurricanes being common.

Officially known as the Republic of Haiti and is set in the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean with a total area of 27,750 square kilometres which includes 190 square kilometres of water. Haiti has a coastline that extends for over 1,771 kilometres along its beautiful coastal plains. Haiti is also the third largest country in the Caribbean just behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The terrain of Haiti is mostly mountainous and rough. Haiti consists of many islands which include Tortuga, La Gonave and Ile a Vache as well as Cayemites and Ile de Anacaona. The highest point of Haiti is known as Pic la Selle which rises to over 2,680 metres and is the second highest point in the Caribbean. Found in the Chaine de la Selle range Pic la Selle is also known as Morne La Selle. The lowest point of Haiti is the Caribbean Sea at sea level.

Haiti has a struggling economy with over 80 percent of the population living below the poverty line and is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. The agricultural industry employs over 60 percent of the population while contributing almost 30 percent to the economy. The main produces of Haiti are coffee, mangoes, sugarcane, rice, corn, sorghum and wood. Haiti receives economic aid from many countries around the globe with the United States being one of the largest contributors. The main exports of Haiti are apparel, manufactures, oils, cocoa, mangoes and coffee. The official currency of Haiti is the Gourde.
