San Pedro Sula

General Information about San Pedro Sula

Located about 200 kilometres north west of Tegucigalpa in Honduras is San Pedro Sula, the nation's second largest city. The city is situated in the Valle de Sula and is considered to be the industrial centre of Honduras. San Pedro Sula was founded in 1536 by Pedro de Alvarado and originally named Villa de San Pedro de Puerto Caballos. The city had only 800 residents by 1590, but is now home to more than 900,000 people.

There are many museums in San Pedro Sula. Three of the main museums are Museo de Arqueologia e Historia de San Pedro Sula, Museo de la Naturaleza and Museo Para La Infancia El Pequeno Sula. Other popular attractions in the city include Parque Central and the San Pedro Cathedral.

Housed in a 1970's style building is the Museo de Arqueologia e Historia de San Pedro Sula, or the Museum of Archeaology and History of San Pedro Sula. Here there are many exhibits which take visitors through the history of the city starting from pre-Columbian times and continuing to current events. The museum features artifacts and antiques that have been well maintained as well as signage in both Spanish and English and bilingual visitors guidebooks which contain more in-depth information on the exhibits.

Situated at the end of Parque Central is the San Pedro Cathedral of San Pedro Sula which was built in 1949. The cathedral has recently been remodelled and restored and occupies almost an entire block of the city. Featuring high walls, pillars and a central cupola, the cathedral is a quiet sanctuary amid the busy San Pedro Sula city. Inside the cathedral are many beautiful paintings and hand crafted wooden statues of various Catholic saints.
