Agra

General Information about Agra

One of the most popular tourist destinations in India is Agra. The city is located in the north of the nation in the state of Uttar Pradesh and is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River. Agra lies about 175 kilometres south east of India's capital city New Delhi and 1,055 kilometres north east of India's largest city Mumbai. Agra is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 1.5 million people.

The most well known of Agra's attractions is the world famous Taj Mahal. This mausoleum was built under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, in memory of his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal who died giving birth to their 14th child. The Taj Mahal was completed around 1648 and is constructed of white marbel, which also features 28 precious and semi-precious stones. Many of the materials used to build the Taj Mahal were bought from countries other than India, such as Afghanistan, China and Sri Lanka. Both Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are buried inside the Taj Mahal. The additional mausoleums and tombs surrounding it house the bodies of Shah Jahan's other wives and Mumtaz Mahal's favourite servant.

Located 2.5 kilometres north west of the Taj Mahal is Agra's second most famous site, Agra Fort which is also known as Lal Qila, Fort Rouge and Red Fort of Agra. This is the most important fort in India as many Mughals lived inside and reigned the country from here. The fort was mentioned for the first time in 1080 when it was captured by Ghaznavide forces. Sikandar Lodi moved into Agra Fort during his reign and was the first Sultan of Delhi to rule from here. Consequently Agra became the 2nd capital of India. It is believed that there were once more than 500 buildings comprising Agra Fort, but most of these were demolished to make room for palaces, or destroyed by the British in the 1800's.

Agra's third UNESCO World Heritage Site is Fatehpur Sikri. This city is part of the Agra district and was the political capital during Mughal Akbar's reign from 1571 to 1585. At the end of his reign Fatehpur Sikri was abandoned as India's headquarters due to lack of water. Some of the most important buildings in Fatehpur Sikri are Jodhabai's Palace, Jama Masjid (the mosque), Tomb of Salim Chisti and Naubat Khana - the drum house were important arrivals were announced. Fatehpur Sikri is currently home to almost 29,000 people.
