Jodhpur

General Information about Jodhpur

Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian state Rajasthan in the centre of the nation. The city is situated 485 kilometres south west of India's capital city New Delhi, 815 kilometres north of India's largest city Mumbai and 505 kilometres west of Agra, the city where the Taj Mahal is found. Jodhpur is often referred to as 'The Sun City' due to the sunny weather it experiences year round, or 'The Blue City' because of the blue tinged buildings in the city. Jodhpur currently has an estimated population of 846,500 people.

The city of Jodhpur is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India as it features many palaces, forts, temples and a desert landscape. Some of the best known places to visit in Jodhpur include Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada, Osiyan Temple, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Maha Mandir Temple and the ancient town Mandore.

Mehrangarh Fort was built in 1459 atop a 150 metre high hill on the outskirts of Jodhpur. This is one of the largest forts in India and features several palaces within it's high, thick walls. Legend says that Rao Jodha, who ordered the fort had to displace Cheeria Nathji, the only human residing on the hill. The man then cursed Jodha and his city with an insufficient supply of water. To this day the area around the fort has periods of drought every few years. Another interesting story about Mehrangarh Fort is that Jodha buried a man alive in the foundations to prove the fort was built on an prosperous site. In return, Joda promised the man his family would be well taken care of. To this day his descendants continue to live in an estate bequeathed to them by Johda.

The Jaswant Thada was built in 1899 as a memorial to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II and is contructed of a milky white coloured marble. Jaswant Thada is a peaceful place in comparison to the city and features a beautiful view of the nearby Mehrangarh Fort. The Jaswant Thada is most recognisable by it's many domes and it's cenotaph. After the main cenotaph was constructed, a royal crematorium and three smaller cenotaphs were built. There is also a memorial dedicated to a peacock who flew into the funeral pyre.
