MumbaiGeneral Information about MumbaiIndia's largest city Mumbai is located on the western coast of the nation, about 1160 kilometres south west of India's capital city New Delhi and 815 kilometres south of the city Jodhpur. Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state Maharashtra and has an estimated population of 13 million people, making it the most populous city in the world. Mumbai is comprised of seven islands which are connected by bridges and is most famous as the birthplace of Bollywood, India's film and television industry.
There are many interesting places to visit in Mumbai, but most of the 'tourist' sites are located in South Mumbai such as the Gateway of India, Elephanta Caves, Hanging Gardens, Mumbadevi Temple, St Thomas Cathedral, The Tower of Silence and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.
Possibly Mumbai's most popular attraction is Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on Elephanta Island. The caves date back to 600 AD and attract more visitors annually than the entire city of Mumbai. Visitors are welcomed at the entrance by the Trimurti carvings which depicts Lord Brahma (the Creator), Lord Vishnu (the Preserver) and Lord Shiva (the Destroyer). There are also many other Hindu carvings and Shaivite temples which have been carved into the rock of Elephanta Caves. Unfortunately many of the sculptures here were vandalised in the 17th century by the Portuguese who used them as target practice.
Serving as the headquarters of the Central Railways is Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, formerly known as Victoria Terminus. This is one of the busiest railway stations in India and the most extravagant Gothic building in Mumbai, featuring stone friezes, stained glass windows and flying buttressess. The station was modeled on the St Pancras Station of London and designed by Frederick William Stevens. Construction on Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus began in 1889 and was completed in 1897.
