New DelhiGeneral Information about New DelhiNew Delhi is the capital and largest city of India in Asia. New Delhi is located in the north of the country west of the Yamuna River on the Gangetic plains. It is believed that humans have lived in the area since 1,000 BC but since 300 BC New Delhi and the surrounding areas have been continuously settled and New Delhi has served as the capital of several empires. New Delhi replaced Calcatta as the capital city of India in the early 1900's and now has a population of almost 300,000 people.
New Delhi is a very popular place to visit and has many attractions such as Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Complex, Ghandi National Museum, Teen Murti Bhavan, Baha'i Lotus Temple, Jama Masjid, India Gate, Rajpath and Rajghat.
The Red Fort, also known as Lal qila, situated in the Old Delhi part of the city is a massive sandstone fort and a place of historical significance. Constructed in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the Red Fort contains many buildings of interest including Khas Mahal (the Emperor's main residence), Rang Mahal (residence of the Sultan's main wife) and Mumtaz Mahal (six apartments for the Sultan's harem) which is now used as a museum.
Humayun's Tomb is one of the best examples of Mughal architecture in New Delhi and was built in the 16th century by second Mughal Emperor Humayun's wife Haji Begum, who is also buried here in a marble and sandstone tomb.
