Batam Island

General Information about Batam Island

Batam Island is a small island in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia. The island is part of the Sijori Growth Triangle and is located 20 kilometres off the south coast of Singapore and 20 kilometres away from Bintan Island. Although it is a small island, Batam Island is very busy with a population of almost 100,000 people. The six major cities on the island are Nagoya (Lubuk Baja), Nongsapura, Batam Centre, Sekupang, Jodoh and Telaga Punggur. Most people living on Batam Island are of Malaysian or Chinese descent. Indonesian is mainly spoken on the island, though various Chinese dialects are commonly spoken due to the large Chinese population.

There are many religious sites on Batam Island such as the Masjid Raya Batam Great Mosque located in Batam Centre which is the biggest mosque in the Riau Archipelago of Indonesia and the centre of the Muslim religion on Batam Island. Also located in Batam Centre is the Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya Buddhist Temple which is one of the largest Buddhist temples in south east Asia. The temple houses two statues of the Goddess of Mercy and one statue of Buddha. There is also a restaurant and a souvenir shop near the temple.

Shopping is one of the most popular activities to partake in on Batam Island. There are many shopping malls on the island which feature internationally known chain stores and local Indonesian shops. Some of the biggest malls are Mega Mall Batam Centre, Panbil Mall, Lucky Plaza and Robinson & Ramayana. Gelael is a popular place to shop for food as the ground level has many supermarkets and the second level has restaurants. There is also KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut inside Gelael.
