YogyakartaGeneral Information about YogyakartaKnown thoroughout the world as the Javanese centre of fine arts and culture in Indonesia is Yogyakarta. The city is located on the Java Island in the centre of Indonesia, and is the capital of the Yogyakarta Special Region. Yogyakarta is situated about 430 kilometres south east of Indonesia's capital city Jakarta and 543 kilometres north west of Denpasar, the capital of Bali, also in Indonesia. Yogyakarta was the capital of Indonesia during the Indonesian National Revolution between 1945 and 1949. The city is currently home to 511,700 people.
As one of the oldest cities in Indonesia, Yogyakarta has many landmarks, monuments and heritage buildings. The most popular of these include Tugu Monument, Kota Gede, Imogiri, Kraton Complex, Candi Sambisari and many temples. Other attractions of the city include Gembria Loka Zoo, Benteng Vredeburg and Yoga Kembali.
Now a quiet town, Kota Gede was the first capital of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. The town was founded in 1582 by Panembahan Senopati and lies just outside the city centre of Yogyakarta. Kota Gede was the economic centre of Yogyakarta before the independence and still remains the leader of silverwork in the city. The cemetery of Kota Gede is where Panembahan Senopati was buried along with with his son-in-law, and enemy, Ki Ageng Mangir. Mangir's body was buried half inside and half outside the cemetery complex after Senopati killed him by smashing his head against the 'Watu Gilang' stone.
The Kraton Complex, also known as the Greater Kraton Compound is essentially a small walled city within a city which is currently home to more than 25,000 people and has it's own market, shops, schools and mosques. The Kraton Complex is located in the heart of Yogyakarta and has been the residence of the Sultans of Yogyakarta since the 1750's. There are two entrances to the complex, a male entrance and a female entrance as indicated by giant 'he' and 'she' dragons. The palace of the Kraton Complex remains very traditional and many elderly retainers continue to wear traditional Javanese garments.
